ART FOUNDATIONS
age groups from age 8 up through adults

A drawing & painting class for all artists. This course has two years of lessons that rotate and can be started on either year.
1 & 3/4 hours once a week. Includes 9 sessions of Open Studio Saturdays once each month. These are great for extra project time and/or to make up for missed days.

Overview:
Two years of lessons ensure that first and second year students learn foundational information without repetition. Artist's techniques, materials and concepts are exciting and fun when presented in easy-to-understand lessons with tons of encouragement and room for creativity. Most art instructors will lead young artists to learn by example and copying, but this class has proven that kids can do amazing and original work when given the right environment and instruction. kids learn accurate drawing skills, color mixing, and painting techniques with acrylics. We also use oil pastels, pencils and charcoal.

  • 10-student limit in classroom with professional instructor.
  • Encouraging atmosphere!
  • Students participate in the Art Show in June.
  • Parents can observe the classes or hang out in our library with free wifi. We are also in Cool Springs, so there are a lot of things to do nearby.
  • At the end of the year, for the kids and teens, there is a final group 3-D Spring painting project. such as the benches, tables or chairs.

In-depth:
This class is offered in 4 age groups and is for anyone who loves or wants to get into creating art. They may be a beginner or they may have drawn and painted for years. Either way, the instruction is foundational for becoming the kind of artists who can enjoy their own work as well as continue developing their skills. We begin this year with an emphasis on accuracy drawing, then move to face drawing skills and personal expression. We break up these segments with painting projects, color journals, and for the younger ages, even a few games that teach art concepts. The color journal days end with the student having created a chart with 25 different versions of a basic color, such as blue. The color mixing is fun, and is based on useful painting colors instead of a simple light and dark chart that is only good because it's easy to teach. Personal style is not taught, but rather encouraged. We don't call any of our work a "mistake", but instead refer to work as either "learners" or "keepers".

The Fall is mostly taken up with important basic information, such as drawing accurately, how to plan a work, methods for cleaning and working, etc. There are also lessons on specific techniques, and a few expressive projects. One class is all about fun at a holiday, such as pumpkin carving or making gingerbread houses.

In the winter, we spend more time with techniques, color journals, and drawing skills. We work on faces during the winter in one of the two years of this curriculum, making clay models of each face part and then drawing it from the model and from reference photos or mirrors. Teenagers and adults then draw a self-portrait and adult classes paint a portrait from a photo.

Spring sees us getting into some fun classes, with a lot more self-expression and paintings. In the younger classes, we have game day, with prizes. We also begin work on our end of year project, where the students work as a group to complete painting our chairs, stools, and other items around the studio. Even the truck gets painted every year by the teenage advanced class.

Our Foundations are part of the exclusive Firstlight curriculum, which is based both on traditional tried and true knowledge, as well as our own new and improved methods and models.
We teach in 3 ways, alternating from one to another to keep the classes interesting. We teach to the head: focusing on foundational knowledge, to the hand: how to do specific techniques, and to the heart: having the freedom for self-expression.

Tuition: $900 for a 35-session curriculum.
or 9 monthly payments of $100 (there is also a once-a-year $25 registration fee)

Mr. D talks about supply cases

We used to have everyone get their own cases, but so many people have been getting our best case, that we are standardizing the cases and including them in our supplies package. It's a great case and we're getting them straight from the manufacturer, so that we can keep the 15% discount off the MSRP.
